The Shiawassee County Agricultural Society is the organization that owns and directs the Shiawassee County Fairgrounds. Membership is open to anyone living in Shiawassee County with an interest in supporting the Fairgrounds and the activities that take place on the grounds throughout the year. Friends of the Fair who live outside of Shiawassee County may become Associate members to show their support for the Agricultural Society. Associate members are not able to vote, however.

The first recorded gathering that would later become the Shiawassee County Fair on record was actually a one day picnic held in 1850; it was the beginning of what has become a great tradition. The format has changed over the years; some years were missed due to the economy, some due to war, but it is truly an important part of the lives of many Shiawassee County residents. The first organized event called the Shiawassee County Fair was held in 1934. The fairgrounds on Hibbard Road just outside of Corunna was first used in 1988 and has grown into a beautiful facility housing activities that begin in April and continue into October, including horse shows, dog shows, auctions, rabbit shows, and a variety of other entertaining events.

As a licensed campground, we now host Camping Rallies for a weekend or a week.

The Shiawassee County Fair is a Youth Fair, highlighting projects exhibited by 4-H Club members, FFA Chapter members, and other youth from throughout the county. Some of the projects will be auctioned at the end of the fair, in many cases helping to fund higher education for the hard working youth exhibitors.

Shiawassee County Fair 2013 will be held August 4-10th. Mark your calendar now! It's a good time to begin to think about crafts or projects that you want to exhibit. Fair books will be available in the Fair Office "the first part of May" The entry deadline is June 21, 2013 with late entries due in the office no later than 5:00pm on July 5, 2013.

The Junior Advisors for 2013 - 2014 have been selected. Congratulations and welcome to Dane Sebesta from Corunna and Christian Voorhies from Durand, who were selected from a very strong group of candidates. We are delighted that you will be a part of the Board of Directors and look forward to your insights as youth members of the Board.

Would you like to rent a space in the Commercial Building in 2013 to advertise your business or market your products? Space is currently available and we have started a waiting list - it isn't too early to call. Please contact the Fair Office if you have questions.

Shiawassee County Fair T-shirts and T-shirts with the 25th Anniversary Celebration logo will be available in the Fair Office until they are gone. There are also a few Combine Demolition Derby shirts available. There will be a variety of other items as we get closer to the Fair. We have new hats available and will soon have mugs and coffee cups available. Stop in for a birthday present for your favorite exhibitor.
 

• Fair Entries •
Fairbooks (the Exhibitor's Guides) will be available the first week in May, in the Fair Office. The deadline for regular entries is June 21, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. Late entries will be accepted until July 5th at 5:00 p.m. All fees for late entries will be doubled, up to $30.00

BUDGET CUTS AFFECT THE SHIAWASSEE COUNTY FAIR
The continued cuts in the state budget have had a profound effect on all of the residents of Michigan. It goes without saying that everyone is making adjustments in their lifestyle and their spending habits. The Shiawassee County Fair is no exception. Due to the recent elimination of premium funding by the State of Michigan (the State paid approximately 66% of the premiums the exhibitors received), the Fair has also had to make adjustments in spending.

The Board of Directors of the Shiawassee County Agricultural Society have looked closely at the premiums each year as the budget for the Fair is prepared. There is much to consider, including the well-being of the exhibitors, the longevity of the fair, maintenance of the facility and the state of the economy in Michigan. The decision of the Board for 2012 was to increase the premium payout for our exhibitors to 65% of the published amount - an increase from the 50% that has been paid over the past 3 years. The Board has considered the implications of this payout and will continue to pay premiums at 65% of the published amount. Thank you all for your support and understanding.

It's not too early to begin planning to support the youth livestock producers of our county. they will auction their projects at the above times and will appreciate your bid!

If you would like to purchase an animal to support a young exhibitor, but don't want to utilize it, there are a variety of options for donating the animal. Please contact the Fair Office for more information.

The Shiawassee County Agricultural Society Annual Dinner / Meeting will be held December 1, 2013 at the ZCBJ hall on Aiken St., Owosso. A social hour will take place at 12:00 pm with dinner at 1:00 pm. A short business meeting will follow. There will be an election of fair board directors during the meeting. Society membership is $6.00 per person or $10.00 per couple and you must be a member to vote. Dinner reservations can be made by calling the Fair Office at 989-743-3611.

Queen Christina Beach currently attends Corunna High School and will graduate in 2014.  After high school, she plans to obtain a degree in the medical field from Michigan State University.  She is currently a member of the National Honor Society and likes to spend time volunteering in the community helping with food drives, volunteering at the Humane Society and teaching children about nutrition.  Christina is currently an active member of the Super Swine 4-H club and has exhibited at the Fair for the past ten years in events that include photography, fine arts and swine.  She has received numerous medals for track and field along with 2 varsity letters for track, 2 in cheerleading and 2 for dance team.  She has 14 years of formal dance training in jazz and ballet and she also enjoys running, scrapbooking and snowboarding.  Christina is the daughter of Wyatt and Tina Beach.

Queen’s Attendant Amanda Mitchell attended Ovid-Elsie High School and was the 2012 valedictorian.  After completing her freshman year Michigan State University, Amanda is transferring to Central Michigan University where she will major in Sports Studies.  Amanda is a member of Fairfield Livestock and has exhibited at the Fair for 11 years with beef, swine, sheep, photography, floriculture, baked goods and crafts.  While in high school, Amanda was actively involved in the National Honor Society, Student Council and served as a youth mentor.  She became an FFA member in the 7th grade serving as a class representative, secretary, treasurer, historian, and in her senior year as the Region IV secretary.  Amanda’s parents are Terry Mitchell and Susan Mabry.
